There was a whole cottage industry of people who would offer seminars that would cost up to $1,000.00 to teach you how to use the software that came with manuals and disks with practice exercises.
Back in the day before IBM bought it, the software came with a ton of manuals.

(I had to learn it in the old days when there was no Windows interface and had to learn coding to do my data runs!). SPSS is a really easy software program to use if you understand statistics. Now it is so cheap to buy, I don't know why anyone would want to do statistics on Excell. There was a student version but it limited you to the number of cases you could enter into the software. It was so cost prohibitive to buy, the only way I could have access to it was at school or work. When SPSS first came out, it was its own company and I only recently learned that it was bought out by IBM. We are told not to worry if the publication date of the book is a few years behind or ahead of the version of SPSS that you are using as each year the updates are not that significant.

I'm impressed that the author has dedicated so much of his professional career to writing this book and updates it every four (I think he said four) And I teach basic statistics in a private college. He also talks about non-parametric tests and illuminutes when to use them when you feel the data violates the assumptions of the more powerful parametric tests. I believe I could pick the right statistical test for a dissertation on my own given the decision tree he provides in the back of the book. He shows you how to calculate effect sizes (something that SPSS does not do well), and I felt I was getting PhD strength knowledge. Its complicated in spots, but I felt when I finished the book I knew a lot about Anova, Ancova, Manova, Factorial Anova, as well as dependent and independent t-tests. The author writes in an entertaining way, and he goes into the assumptions of the various statistical tests, the background theory, and shows you how to read and interpret output. I used this book for a Statistics course at Northcentral University Phd program in Business Management. Make sure you have a box of tissues nearby. Now Andy, author to author, sit down with the Kindle and try to read your own book. You actually have to write down your original location number and "go to" the "got to" menu and type in the number "to get back." For me the Kindle works fine for a linear read, start at the beginning and go straight to the end.and I love it.but not a book that by its nature requires mobility. Additionally, it is not at all easy to get back to your original location when you opt to tap a reference or go to a figure. The paper version uses multiple columns and color coding to add to its readability. It is not possible to expand the graphs and charts, which are essentially unreadable (nearly microscopic) on the Kindle and are essential in understanding the subject matter.
I have around 200 purchases on Kindle, this is my first technical one. They are also a format in and of themselves, which brings me back to Kindle. But books are more than just words in print. Field has helped me to understand statistics and their use in research in a way I never thought was possible. Never have I seen such an intelligent, witty book on statistics or for that matter on any technical subject. On the other hand, for content, style, and all that makes for a great book, the paper version has it all hands down. I would rate the overall Kindle experience for this book around 2 stars. Kindle absolutely lacks the technology to offer the book. With considerable pain, I give Andy Field's marvelous, somewhat spectacular book, a 4 star rating.
